The Challenge

Quilt around the World will publish an inspirational photograph each week from 10 January 2015 until 19 December 2015. We have included a few photos to give you an idea of what to expect, but they will NOT be part of the 50pictures series.

Quilters around the world, no matter whether you are a novice, an occasional quilter or professional textile artist, are invited to participate in our 50pictures challenge by interpreting one or more of these photographs in the form of a miniature quilt. After sending the finished miniature to Quilt around the World together with written comments on choice of photo, inspiration and motivation it will be “hung” in our 50pictures online gallery. In addition, throughout 2015, 2016 and 2017 we are planning:

  • Exhibitions
  • Publication in print and/or digital catalogue
  • To have an international jury select three “winners”.

The Rules:

  • Quilt(s) should consist of three layers (front, batting, back) with closed edges.
  • The miniature quilt should measure 12” by 12” or 30 cm x 30 cm, whereby a tolerance of 10% is allowed. It should have a hanging sleeve 2" or 5 cm wide and a label on the back of the quilt stating the title of the piece and the name of the participant, both firmly attached.
  • There are no restrictions on techniques, colours and (textile) materials with the exception of the following:
  • The top layer of the quilt must be sewn.
  • Photoprints are NOT accepted!
  • Embellishments may be used but should not exceed a thickness of ¼” or 0.6 cm.
  • The quilt should be accompanied by a comment from the quilter on the motivation for the choice of picture and its representation in the quilt.
  • It is NOT necessary for the quilt to be a fabric replica of the photograph. However, the association and inspiration must be clear, from the quilt itself and/or from the written explanation.
  • Neither the title of the quilt nor the comment should reveal the quilter’s identity.

How it works:

  • Each week, a new photo will be published at www.quilt-around-the-world.com.
  • After publication you will have approx. 2 months to design and sew your miniature quilt. The deadline for submitting your quilt(s) will be clearly stated with each photo.

NEW: No more indivdiual deadlines! The general deadline for ALL miniature quilts to be received at the Quilt around the World office is

31 March 2016!

We would like to encourage you however to send us pictures of your quilts as soon as they are finished!

  • Entry fee: 25 Euros for one or more quilts
  • Paying members receive a member of 5 Euros on the fee.
  • If you plan to send in more than one quilt and want to save on postage, you can send in a photo of your finished quilt and transfer the entry fee by the corresponding deadline.
  • All monies left over will be donated to Doctors without Borders (www.doctorswithoutborders.com).
  • Throughout 2015 and the beginning of 2016, all quilts sent in will be published anonymously in our 50pictures online gallery along with the comments made by the quilter. The names of the quilters will only be disclosed after the end of the 50pictures project.

In March 2016, an international jury will select three winners from all the entries based on the following criteria:

  • Originality of idea and design
  • Representation of picture in quilt and comments
  • Craftsmanship and appropriate use of materials

The judges' decision will be final.

In addition, at the end of March 2016 attractive prizes will be raffled among all participants.

All Quilt around the World registered readers will have the opportunity to vote for their favourite quilt.

After the end of this project, all works will of course be sent back to the quilt artists!

Why should you participate?

  • You will have a weekly inspiration for new quilt projects.
  • You will be supporting a very worthy charity whilst indulging in your favourite hobby.
  • Your quilt will be published in the exhibition catalogue "50pictures" (working title). We reserve the right, however, to refuse publication, e g. in cause of copyright  infringement.
  • Through the 50pictures gallery you will be able to compare your interpretation of a picture with those of other quilters around the world.
  • Your quilt will be shown at an exhibition in 2016.
  • Fabric packs, useful quilting tools and notions will be raffled among all participants.
  • An international jury will select 3 winning entries. Participants can choose whether they would like to see the judges' feedback on their entry.
