Harlekin Sashing Block

Harlekin Sashing Block

The Harlekin quilt is an example of an inverted world order of sorts: Whilst the main block, the Harlekin block described in the previous chapter, is a simple and quickly sewn block, the sashing in this quilt requires some major staying power. There is nothing difficult about the block as such, but making 120 identical Hourglass blocks does need more than a little forbearance.

Finished block size

5” by 9" (12.5 by 22.5 cm)

Note:

As for all template-free blocks or projects on Quilt around the World, seam allowances of ¼” for imperial or 0.75 cm for metric are included in the cutting and sewing instructions.

Cutting

For 1 block

  • Squares A: Cut two 4 ¼” (11 cm) squares from the light turquoise green fabric.
  • Squares B: Cut two 4 ¼” (11 cm) squares from the medium turquoise green fabric.
  • Strips C: Cut two strips 1 ½” by 9 ½” (4 cm by 24 cm) from the dark blue fabric

Cutting

  • Cut all squares twice diagonally.

Sewing

For 1 block

  • Set out one set of triangles cut from an A square beside one set of triangles cut from a B square.

Quarter Square Triangles

  • Switch two light green triangles with two medium green triangles.

Exchange of Triangles

  • Sew each light green triangle to a medium green one. Press the seam allowance towards the medium green triangle.

Sewing

  • Join the two triangle units and press seam allowance towards one side.

Sewing

  • Repeat for the other two sets of triangles. You will have one Hourglass block extra. Save this for the rest of the sashing blocks.
  • Sew three Hourglass blocks together after rotating the middle block through 90°:

3 Squares

  • Add the two dark blue strips to the longer edges of the three block unit.

Strips

  • The Harlekin sashing block is now finished:
